Assessment -- Vocabulary Quiz #1
--complete the assessment to the best of your ability until you are finished
--When you finish, carefully follow the directions below.

Notetaking Activity -- Edgar Allan Poe Background and Human Nature
  • Google Edgar Allan Poe and scroll through your hits for a reliable source.
  • Once you have found a reliable source, look for two important facts about Poe that can help you infer what he might aim to convey about human nature in his literature.  Based on his experiences, what might Edgar Allan Poe think human beings are really like?
  • Click on the Google Doc link that corresponds with your class block:
  • After reading what others before you have typed (so that your contribution is not unnecessarily repetitive), type one of the important facts that you found about Poe.  Be prepared to share both your fact and inference with your classmates in a follow-up discussion!
  • Change the color of your font and type your name after your contribution as I have done in my model.
Transition
--Please pick up each of the following from the two desks located in the front of the classroom:
  • the "Short Story Writing Assignment #1" sheet
  • the "Short Story Analysis Sheet"
  • a story map (if desired)
  • a copy of "The Masque of the Red Death"
Discussion Preparation/Writing Workshop -- Short Story Writing Assignment #1, "The Masque of the Red Death" Pre-reading and First-Draft Reading, and Thematic Writing Assignment Conferencing
--Complete a gist reading of "Short Story Writing Assignment #1" sheet.
  • Do you have any questions that I can answer?
--"Gear up" for reading "The Masque..." via the "Before reading" section of the "Short Story Analysis Sheet."
--Conduct an active/purposeful first-draft reading of "The Masque..." (and strongly considering actively/purposefully rereading the story as well!).
--If you finish (or if you prefer!), engage in free reading.
*DURING THIS TIME, I WILL CALL STUDENTS UP TO THE FRONT TABLE FOR CONFERENCING.*

Before You Leave
--Fully shutdown your Chromebook, return it to the proper slot, and plug it in via a cord.

HW (Practice/Take-Home Assessment/Class Preparation)
--WE ARE TAKING A BREAK FROM MEMBEAN 10/11-10/17; HOWEVER, YOU CAN STILL TRAIN OVER THE COURSE OF THESE 7 DAYS (AND ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO DO SO TO RECOVER SOME CREDIT IF YOU HAVE FALLEN BEHIND)!
--Complete Membean training until you have earned 100 correct responses (approximately 45 minutes) over three different days before 11:59 PM on Thursday (10/24).  (See the "English Department Membean Routine" sheet.)
Writing
--Continually improve your Thematic Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews essay.  Conferences will continue occurring through next week, and a score will be reported as part of your Marking Period 2 GPA.
--Begin thinking about your short story.  The final draft of the assignment will be due before you know it!
HW (Class Preparation)
--Finish "gearing up" for reading "The Masque..." via the "Before reading" section of the "Short Story Analysis Sheet."  Then, conduct an active/purposeful first-draft reading of "The Masque..."
