English 10 Honors--11/15/2018

Jump Off
--Turn in your finalized short story by placing it in the black basket on the front table.

S. the C.
--You should leave class today...
  • with plans in place for improving your first major writing piece of the course (and having already begun the process of moving forward!)
  • knowing more about some of your classmates (and, hopefully, appreciating them as a result!)
  • with a better sense of what you might face when taking the NYS ELA Regents Examination in June of 2019
  • understanding a test-taking strategy that you might consider implementing when taking the Regents (and other multiple choice assessments such as the ACT)
  • with some literature analysis practice under your belt as we head in to our next unit of the course, which is geared around William Golding's literary work Lord of the Flies
--Reminder: The ROUGH End-of-"Unit" Writing Assignment Prompt:

Write a text-based, grammatically sound, tightly-written response of two to three paragraphs.  In your response, respond to the following question so as to reveal a theme statement (central idea) drawn from "The Masque of the Red Death"What seems to be Edgar Allan Poe's "thesis" about human nature/why people do what they do, say what they say, etc. as revealed in the story he tells?  Then, analyze how Poe's use of characterization or symbolism (or...) helps develop his "thesis" about human nature.  Use at least three pieces of strong textual evidence spanning the entire text to support your analysis, and be sure to tie back to your claim often.
