Jump Off (1-2 mins.)
--Please pick up each of the following sheets from the front table: 
  • the "Free Reading Course Component--Overview Document" (if you do not already have a copy)
  • the "Free Reading Course Component--Book Surfing" sheet
  • the "English Department Membean Routine" sheet
We will be dealing with each of these sheets during the first 1/3 of today's class block.
--Please find your name card and sit in the corresponding desk.  Seating charts have switched around a little bit due to schedule changes, and these are your assigned seats for now.

--Block 2 ACE: Free reading overview (streamlined--highly encouraged to read sheet on own for a deeper understanding)
--"lay of the land" given (e.g., dystopian literature by univent), use of "Free Reading Course Component--Book Surfing" sheet modeled, directions given for what to do when finished with Chromebooks

Vocabulary Workshop -- Membean (Routine, Calibration, and Training Session) (25-30)
--oral reading purpose established for "English Department Membean Routine" sheet
  • After an oral reading of the Membean sheet, you should be able to answer the following questions:
    • What is Membean?
    • What are the weekly expectations for Membean?
    • How is your interaction/progress with Membean reported?
    • What accountability measures exist to help you stay current with Membean?
    • BONUS:
      • Why do we use Membean here at Livonia Senior High School?
--purposeful oral reading of "English Department Membean Routine" sheet
  • discussion/Q & A
--"Membean Learning Session Tutorial" video
--Transition
  • Obtain your Chromebook from the cart in the back of the classroom.
--log in to Chromebooks
--enroll in Membean via classroom code written on the whiteboard
--troubleshoot our way through calibrating and completing one 15-minute training session

Flex Block (cont.) -- "Letter to Yourself"/Free Reading (flex time)
--complete the following checklist:
  • Enroll in GoGuardian via classroom code written on the whiteboard (if you have not already done so)
  • Access today's lesson on the blog (www.mrmartinsenglish.blogspot.com)
  • Finish typing your "Letter to Yourself" in Google Docs (if you have not already done so)
  • Copy/paste your "Letter to Yourself" into "YOUR FUTURE LETTER" field at the following web address:
    • https://www.futureme.org/
      • Click on "Choose Specific Date" and use June 25, 2022
      • Use your school email address (or, if you prefer, your personal email address)
    • If you feel compelled to do so now that your ultimate purpose is clearer, modify/add to your letter.
  • Engage in "Book Surfing" in an attempt to find the perfect read (unless you already have a book here in class today), and sign out a book with Mr. Martin if you find one.
  • Engage in free reading.
Transition (2-3 mins.)
--fully shutdown your Chromebook, return it to the proper slot, and plug it in via the proper cord--I'm watching yoouuu! :)

Teambuilding Activity -- Artifact Bags (time permitting)
--I hand a paper bag to random student--he/she then displays items from the bag one at a time, briefly describing what he/she is seeing
--guess who?!
--owner of bag further describes, explains, shares anecdotes, etc. as a form of introduction to teacher/peers
--REPEAT THE PROCESS...

HW (Class Preparation)
--Complete 45 minutes of Membean training in three different days before 11:59 PM on Thursday, 9/27 (see the "English Department Membean Routine" sheet).
--If you have a book at home that you are reading or would like to begin reading for our free reading course component, bring the book to class next time (and daily between now and when you finish the book or the end of Marking Period 2, whichever comes first).  Otherwise, make time to sign a book out either from our classroom library or the high school library.  (FYI: The high school library should be open next week, and I will try to find us some class time to swing over there!)  I will be checking your books in the near future!
