English 10 Honors--5/4/2016

Jump Off (2-3 mins.)
--Take out both your copy of To Kill a Mockingbird and the “Purposeful Reading Guide” that corresponds with it.  The purpose of both today's class block and Friday's class block is getting a substantial "chunk" of the text under our belts before next week so that we can begin working in earnest on the End-of-Course Assignment.  Once you are situated, engage in purposeful/active reading quietly and independently for the first half-ish of class.  After about 40 minutes, you will take a brief break.

S. the C. (5-8 mins.)
--agenda/HW

Independent Purposeful Reading -- Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird pages 3-32 (40 mins.)
--Purposefully/actively read as many of the assigned pages as you can by working through the “Purposeful Reading Guide.”  Remember that your End-of-Course Assignment pertains to arguing about human nature and includes both Lord of the Flies and To Kill a Mockingbird.  You might want to take additional notes (on Post-its?) accordingly.

Brain Break (5-8 mins.)
--inform the students that they have a 5 minute break and ask them what they would like to do during this time:
  • Mum Ball?
  • The Shoe Game?
  • Thumbs Up, 7-Up?
  • Some appropriate game they have in mind that I haven’t come up with?!
--Following this break, students can either continue reading in the same fashion as earlier in the class block or engage in discussion.  For those who would like to discuss, the following directions apply:

Transition -- form groups of 2-3 people (1-2 mins.)

Closure Discussion -- Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird pages 3-32 (remainder of class block)
--in your groups, discuss what you have read thus far as per the reading guide and your Post-its
--MAKE SURE TO RE-COLUMN THE DESKS BEFORE CLASS ENDS

HW (Class Preparation)
--Finish purposefully/actively reading pages 3-32 of To Kill a Mockingbird by working through the “To Kill a Mockingbird Novel Study--Purposeful Reading Guide.”  Remember that your End-of-Course Assignment pertains to arguing about human nature and includes both Lord of the Flies and To Kill a Mockingbird.  You might want to take additional notes (on Post-its?) accordingly.
--Continue progressing through your End-of-Course Assignment.  Do not let the end of the school year unnecessarily creep up on you!  We are tentatively scheduled for full blocks with computer access on the following days: Thursday, 5/26; Wednesday, 6/1; and Friday, 6/3.  Plan accordingly!  The written portion of the End-of-Course Assignment is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, 6/7, which will also be the first day of in-class presentations.
  • BRING YOUR END-OF-COURSE ASSIGNMENT MATERIALS TO CLASS DAILY, INCLUDING YOUR COPY OF TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD AND THE READING GUIDE. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN THESE MATERIALS MIGHT BE NECESSARY!
--Try to find some time to read your free reading book between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
--BRING YOUR VOCABULARY BOOK TO CLASS DAILY. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU MIGHT NEED IT!
